Although it is universally beloved, many cardiologists have long debated the health risks that come along with consuming processed cheese. As it turns out, the biggest threat to our heart health may actually be American cheese.
American Cheese Contains Harmful Ingredients
Registered dietitian Lori Walker has said that American cheese contains an abundance of unhealthy ingredients that can lead to serious health concerns. “Processed cheeses like American cheese are loaded with sodium and saturated fats,” she warned.
Walker further added that eating American cheese can lead to higher cholesterol, raised blood pressure levels, weight gain, and increased risk of heart attack or stroke.
Excess Sodium Is the Biggest Drawback to American Cheese
Heavily processed cheeses are loaded with sodium additives that allow for a longer shelf life and a smoother taste. While this is true for all processed cheeses, American cheese is by far the biggest offender.
Excess sodium can send one’s cardiovascular system into overdrive. The large quantity of sodium can cause a consumer’s blood pressure to rise, while exposing them to the risk of hypertension and heart disease.
Ditch the American Cheese in Favor of These Healthier Options
There’s no need for cheese lovers to eliminate cheese entirely from their diet. There are an assortment of healthier cheese alternatives that are both tasty and nutritious.
Non-dairy substitutes such as almond and soy cheese contain less saturated fat than American, while parmesan, feta and goat cheese are desirable due to lower sodium and high calcium content. Cottage cheese is also considered a heart-healthy source of protein.
Other Ways to Keep Your Heart Health in Check
While it’s beneficial to keep a mindful eye on our cheese consumption, it’s also important to be proactive when it comes to reducing the risk of heart problems.
Reading food labels, managing portions, participating in regular physical activity and eating a healthy balance of foods are all great ways to remain in top cardiovascular condition. Cheese should be incorporated into an optimal diet – just as long as it’s not American, of course.
